Unsettling Vermont

A resource for Vermonters and beyond on Abenaki identity claims, history, and fraud, compiled by scholars and Indigenous People

We have work to do.

This site is made to help Vermonters get informed about the state’s Indigenous history–and to understand why it is that the Abenaki First Nation of Odanak, and many scholars, have rejected the claims made by Vermont’s four State Recognized Tribes regarding their identity and history.

There is actually a lot of documentation and historical evidence that can help us understand the last 200+ years. It’s important to know what really happened to be good allies with the first people of this land—and to not be vulnerable to false histories.

For background, we have also compiled resources to help you understand how Indigenous communities understand identity and what it means for European Settlers to “race-shift” into Indigenous identities.
